The music of British Soul Diva Cissy Stone is smooth, enticing, danceable, and to the ears of fans of 70s/80s Disco and Soul music it is nothing short of a gift. In fact, Stone was a staple on the UK and European club scene while fronting The Cissy Stone Band throughout the 70s and 80s… including a time in Belgium when the late Marvin Gaye joined her on stage to play piano behind the dynamic vocalist.
In 1976 Cissy signed with Decca Records releasing the Disco single “Gone But Not Forgotten” b/w “Part Of The Band.” In 1981 UK label Happy Face issued Cissy’s single “Ambitious” b/w “Can’t Stop The World.” In 1988 the talented singer inked with US based 5th Avenue Records releasing a string of singles for the label.
Remarkably, many of Cissy Stone’s recordings from the mid 80s through the early 90s never found release. That all changed when Fervor Records got involved in 2020. The nine tracks on Stonewall provide a richly deserved re-introduction to talented Ms. Stone.
British bassist and producer Des Tong (of Sad Café) recorded the songs of Stonewall, as well as the House infused EP, Never Be Without Your Love in the mid 80s – 1990. Tracks like “Everybody Loves a Winner” and “What About You” provide a nice blend of late 70s and early 80s soul and pop music and the record itself shows the heavy influence of artists like the Pointer Sisters, Erma Franklin, and the northern soul movement that was extremely popular in the UK during the late 1960s.
